in her shoes

Toronto-based interior-design guru Christine Dovey describes her style as a mix of girlie with a little edge. “I get excited by things that are quirky,” she admits. It’s no surprise that her refined aesthetic propelled what began as a simple e-design service—Dovey created mood boards for clients’ own DIY projects—into a full-service business with international reach. Now, Dovey is expanding her design repertoire: She’s flipping a house and has a decor collection and a reality-TV show in the works.

Ballet flats don’t have to be basic. Opt for a wild print and stand out from the pack.

Catriona Smart wrote for a friend’s blog before launching Coco & Cowe, a lifestyle site that she calls “your digital best friend.” Smart and her team are always on the hunt for the best jet-set destinations, restos and fashion finds. Her career advice? “People are so afraid to put something out there that they stop themselves,” she says. “Just start!”

Next time you reach for black on black, think again. Pump up the volume with a bold hue instead. Who says you have to shake off the winter blues?

THE brainiac

Consider the loafer your new BFF. This French-girl staple will give you the laissez-faire flair you’ve been after, whether you’re at work, on a date or having brunch with your squad.

Is your favourite fashion uniform jeans and a white T-shirt? Step up your everyday look with some edgy booties.

If Hana James’ effervescent personality is any indication of the benefits of juicing, we’re stocking up, stat. The Torontonian opened Greenhouse Juice in 2014 with Anthony Green, plus five partners who work behind the scenes in New York and Los Angeles. Since its launch, the juicery has opened five more locations across the city, quickly becoming the go-to for a pick-me-up. When James isn’t serving up organic, cold-pressed elixirs behind the counter, she’s concocting new recipes (the superfood-packed smoothies are her brainchild) and working with a holistic nutritionist to ensure that everything on the menu is as good for you as it tastes. While the Greenhouse Juice team has a no-compromise motto when it comes to sustainability (glass bottles are a must) and produce (it’s always 100-percent organic), James is quick to point out that they don’t take themselves too seriously. “We like to call ourselves ‘recreational juicers,’” she says.

These snappy kicks are too nice to stow in your gym bag. Besides, sneakers are no longer just a treadmill staple. Just ask Gigi Hadid. Join the off-duty-model club with a pair of cool retro trainers, all-white runners or floral flatforms. We even give you permission to wear them at the office.

Take the classic knee-high boots to new heights by pairing them with a flirty dress, chunky knit and skinny scarf—our favourite accessory this season—for an haute take on equestrian chic.

If your ultimate playlist is ’90s R&B (Mariah meets Whitney meets Aaliyah), it’s time to embrace the throwback vibe and lace up a pair of military-inspired boots.
